• Discover the Mysteries of the Deep: Ocean Institute's Bioluminescence Night Cruises Return!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | DANA POINT, CA - May 8, 2024 - Prepare to embark on a journey into the ethereal depths of the ocean as Ocean Institute proudly announces the return of its Bioluminescence Night Cruises. Back by popular demand, these enchanting expeditions offer a rare opportunity to witness the mesmerizing phenomenon of bioluminescence along the Southern California coast.
Scheduled on select nights during the summer months, the Bioluminescence Night Cruises are a captivating exploration of the nocturnal marine world. Setting sail from Dana Point aboard the renowned R/V Sea Explorer, guests are invited to immerse themselves in an unforgettable experience from 8:30 pm to 10:30 pm.
"Bioluminescence Night Cruises are a unique opportunity for individuals and families to witness the magical glow of the ocean at night," said Jack Parker, Port Captain of Ocean Institute and Captain of the R/V Sea Explorer. "Our cruises provide a glimpse into the fascinating world of bioluminescent organisms and the intricate ecosystems they inhabit."
During the cruise, participants will have the chance to learn about the remarkable ability of marine animals to produce their own light. Led by knowledgeable marine biologists, guests will observe the natural spectacle of bioluminescent plankton illuminating the waters below.
One of the highlights of the excursion is the deployment of a meter net 600 feet deep, capturing thousands of drifting organisms that emit their own light. From tiny plankton to fish and squid, participants will witness the intricate food chain in action, often accompanied by sightings of playful sea lions and dolphins.
"We are thrilled to offer guests the opportunity to experience the beauty and wonder of bioluminescence firsthand," said Kaitlyn Davidson, Growth Marketing Manager at Ocean Institute. "These cruises provide a unique educational experience that fosters a deeper appreciation for the marine environment and the delicate balance of life within it."
